Nichelle Suba Retires from Madison Central

Nichelle Suba has been an integral part of the Madison school community for nearly two decades, leaving a lasting impression on both her students and colleagues. Her innovative and collaborative teaching methods have contributed to a strong sense of community within the district that will resonate for years to come.

Before joining the Madison community, Nichelle worked in the restaurant business in sales and catering so that she could balance her career with starting a family. Eventually, she decided to utilize her degree in education and became a substitute teacher. After 20 years of subbing and earning her master’s degree, Nichelle transitioned into a full-time teaching position. She began teaching at Madison in 2006 and has been a cornerstone in the district ever since. Her dedication to education has made her a positive presence for her students and a mentor for her peers.

Jessica Mortensen has been hallmates with Nichelle since 2010 and considers her one of her closest friends. “I trust her with my life,” Mortensen shares, “I seek her advice often, and I really value her unique perspective.” She also praises Nichelle’s commitment to her students and Madison school. “She’s not complacent. She cares a lot about the school. She lives and breathes this place.” When it comes to the classroom, Nichelle has built a curriculum that is fun and interactive, including games and roleplaying, allowing the students to put themselves out there and make memories. She has also established strong connections to her students, simply by being present in their lives, whether that be in the hallways, the classroom, or by attending their sporting events. By showing up when it matters most, Suba has left a notable impact on her students, and the Madison school district. When she leaves, it’ll be quiet, and it will leave a huge void for Mortensen. “These are shoes that will never be filled, and not that they should be,” she acknowledges, “It’s been a unique experience with her across the hall all these years.”

After 19 years, Nichelle leaves Madison with many cherished memories and experiences. She is grateful for the opportunity to get to know the kids in the community and work alongside passionate colleagues who care about student success. Nichelle encourages her colleagues to continue to “care about the academic success and growth of the students as much as you do,” and to “stay strong.”

She is looking forward to retirement, as it will allow her to do the thing she loves most—being outdoors. From hiking to fishing, to kayaking, and skiing, Nichelle is excited to enjoy all four seasons outside and have the flexibility to spend more time with her kids.
