Students Get Active in New Exercise Science Class

Some days, you could easily mistake this class for a boutique boot camp.

Students in the new Exercise Science high school elective course put their theory and knowledge into action with a weekly workout on “Fitness Fridays.” Recently, that included a 30-minute HIIT workout modeled after one from a local gym.

Teacher Austin Drake said he added the class to the science catalog this school year to help students make a connection between exercise and the human body. He talks about different types of workouts, but also discusses general fitness, nutrition, biology, personal training, gym safety and other related topics.

“I have a passion for fitness and exercise, and I wanted students to get a more in-depth look into this field, to understand more about how the human body works,” he said.

Now students are exploring different career paths in the fitness and exercise field and will eventually select one career to research and present to their classmates. They also hope to take a field trip to a local fitness center.
