"What Are You Reading?" MCS Staff Takes on New Initiative

Mrs. Thurston Door Sign

Mrs. Thurston is reading "I Survived", according to her door sign. The signs are part of a new district reading initiative.

Madison Central School staff members are participating in a building-wide reading initiative throughout the 2021-22 school year.

The initiative, entitled “What Are You Reading?”, encourages teachers and staff to prominently display the cover of the book they are currently reading on a sign outside of their classrooms, and in other spaces around the building. Staff will update their selections over the course of the year.

The idea was hatched during a summer professional development session for English Language Arts. The signs were created during Superintendent’s Conference days, and put up before the first day of school in order to welcome students with the shared vision of the staff.

The project is intended to help MCS Staff members connect with students, and inspire the students to create a life-long enjoyment of reading by following the example set by staff. All MCS staff members, including support staff, are encouraged to participate.

Additionally, the District hopes to transform this building-wide initiative into a community-wide one by getting community members and local businesses involved.

We will periodically update the community as the staff selections change throughout the year, in hopes of not only inspiring our students, but our community as well.
