Kindergarten Newsletter May 3, 2013
Hello everyone! We have had a very busy week in Kindergarten! Please mark your calendars with the dates I will give you at the end of this newsletter. Thank you. This week, we finished learning about plants. The children took a short assessment on this, which I will go over with them before I send it home. We are germinating green beans which are almost ready to plant. When they are ready, we will send them home. We also planted sunflower seeds this week. When they begin to grow, I will send them home for your child to plant somewhere outside your house. They are excited about this! We began our farm unit this week as well. The children will be learning a lot of information about farm animals and the crops farmers grow. During reading, we worked on sounding out words with the initial and ending “g” as well as initial “w.” They also took their Unit 8 reading test on Tuesday. As always, we continue to read our leveled books during reading groups. We did a pre-assessment on sight words this week. If your child knows all or most of their sight words, they will be receiving a congratulations letter with a new list to help them prepare for first grade. If your child does not know all of their sight words, you will receive a letter with how many they know and a reminder to help them practice. Thank you for your support. The children will be reassessed in a couple of weeks. For math, we have been working hard on subtraction as well as decomposing numbers up to 10. This was difficult for them to understand at first. However, most have a good understanding now. We will continue to review both concepts. We are also going to be beginning to count sets of 11-20 and write the corresponding numbers. Along with this, we will be working on place value. During our writing time, the children are working on writing sentences using sentence starters. Next week, they will also be free writing their own sentences. In other news, as it is May already, please remember to send in the class snack for May. Thank you. Also, I would like to welcome our new student Marrisa. We are very happy to have her join our class. Please review the important dates on the back of this newsletter. Thank you. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely, Mrs. Millson
